When you take your senior pictures is just as important as where. Why is that? There are several factors that determine the best time to take your pics in Portland. I love helping juniors prepare for their senior pictures and knowing which season is a great first step!
The first thing to think about is what seasons could work for you. In Portland we have 3 main seasons for senior pictures. Late Spring, Summer and Early Fall can each work but which is best for YOU? Now you might be thinking, do I really take my senior pictures BEFORE my senior year? YUP! Know why? Your yearbook has a deadline somewhere between mid September – early January. And you don’t wanna have a blank spot in the yearbook where your gorgeous senior picture should be right?
Late Spring is a lesser known time for senior pictures. You’re still in your Junior year so for some it just doesn’t feel right. In the late spring you’ll have cool weather, lots of options with everything green and beautiful blooming flowers. The sunset isn’t super late and the light is beautiful if you get a clear day. The cons are lots of events on the weekends in April & May with prom and sports. Plus we still get a good amount of rain so you could have to reschedule for a later date. But if you love flowers like rhodies, tulips and flowering trees a Late Spring date could be perfect for your senior pictures!
Early Fall is when most Seniors suddenly realize they need their pictures done NOW! Gah! Early Fall in September and October can have cool weather, earlier sunset and if you are super lucky a bit of fall color. But most cases your yearbook image will be due before the fall colors change. The last few years the change happened late October- early November. And you are risking your pictures getting rescheduled due to rain. Last year I got rained out every weekend in October except for one. Plus photographers are busy with family pictures this time of year so you’re more likely to have scheduling conflict. Don’t get me wrong, I love fall! I love the cozy sweaters, jeans and boots but if it was my senior pictures…I wouldn’t risk it.
The most popular season for senior pictures in Portland is summer. You’re out of school, you’ve got more free time, and the weather is pretty great most of the time. If you book a June date you can still get some gorgeous flowers and green in the background or wait for a late July or August date to get that tall dry wheat grass look that is so popular. The negatives can be the heat and a later sunset so you’ll be starting your shoot later in the evening. (I prefer to schedule sessions 2-3 hours before sunset.) And no stress about making that yearbook deadline because you’ll have your pictures taken plenty in advance.
So what season do you think you’d like?
