September is tomorrow! Can’t believe how fast August went! And with September comes a new school year, pumpkin spice lattes, apples, changing leaves and my most favorite season…FALL! Fall for a photographer means busy busy busy. Generally I’m booked every weekend with senior pictures or family portraits because everyone wants to take pictures in the Fall! I’ve put together 4 tips to ensure you get a great family portrait this year!
1. Plan Ahead
No seriously, like today. Start looking! Search your instagram or facebook feed for those local photographers you’ve been following for years but have never reached out to. (or me) And then send them an email or fill out their contact form and hope you can get a date! Fall is the busy time of year for photographers because everyone wants updated family pictures for holiday cards!
2. Plan For Rain
We live in Portland. You’d think that we’d all know the drill by now right? If the rain hasn’t started by October 1st we know it’s coming….it’s just a matter of time. So talk to your photographer about what happens if it rains. Will you wait it out, will you reschedule or will you shoot in the rain? Depending on the family and how little the littles are, I’m happy to shoot in the rain as long as I have a some tree coverage. Family Minis last year were practically a downpour but we all had a blast and I kinda love the effect of the raindrops on the lens!
3. Don’t Match
If I see one more family picture of everyone in jeans and black t-shirts or jeans and white button down shirts I might barf. The 90’s were soooo long ago so lets just leave them there mmmkay. (really hoping you read that with a sarcastic tone) If you are reading my blog your family is not a formal pictures family. I want your family to look like yourselves, just cleaned up and looking your best! I even have a handy guide to help you coordinate <= key word there without looking too matchy-matchy.
4. Don’t Just Get Digitals
Ya ya ya, everyone *thinks* this is what they want but then they get the USB and what happens to it? Is it in the back of your desk drawer? Guessing that is where it will end up. So glad you took all that time to plan ahead, book the dream pro photographer and coordinate outfits. All that work for the images to be locked away, never to be seen! (cue dramatic hand over forehead while fainting) But seriously, I know you want the digitals so you’ll have them forever, I get that. I just want to ensure that at least one of your family portraits makes it on the wall of your home. Just one that you can look at every day and smile a little smile remembering how fun your shoot was and how much you love your family.
And then a year from now you’ll see how much they’ve changed and hopefully want to do it all again! If you’d like a quick and easy way to update your family portrait shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and grab a spot at one of my Family Mini Sessions!
